ORONO – There are some newly minted national champions in our area as the University of Maine’s rugby sevens team are National Collegiate Rugby Division II national champions.
The Black Bears defeated Georgetown 19-15 in Washington, D.C. on Saturday to take home the gold for the first time in program history. Maine was down two scores in the final period and staged a comeback capped off by a sudden death try by senior Brett Benham.
“It’s an incredible feeling to score that but, at the end of the day, none of it would be possible with the hard work of my teammates,” Benham says. “We’ve been working for it all year and to see it come to fruition like this is incredible.”
