FEMA administrator calls for investigation into bias allegations [Video]

Deanne Criswell, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has asked the inspector general’s office to investigate whether a former employee acted alone in instructing workers to avoid homes with Donald Trump signs during recovery efforts for hurricanes Milton and Helene.”I have already requested an investigation to the IG,” Criswell said.Criswell emphasized that the agency has no policy, rule or doctrine that would encourage political discrimination.”The actions of this one individual are not representative of the work that we do at FEMA,” Criswell said. The allegations arose after a former FEMA employee, Marn’i Washington, claimed she was following orders from a superior. Washington sent a text message to her staff of 11 people to “avoid homes advertising Trump.””The actions directed by Ms. Washington are unacceptable, and when I received this text message, I directed her termination,” Criswell said.Washington insists she is being scapegoated and that she was given instructions to handle “political hostile territory.””When I arrived, they were implementing avoidance and de-escalation, and unfortunately, that trend ran with those Trump campaign signs,” Washington said.Criswell stated there is no evidence to support Washington’s claims that she received instructions from a superior.”We help all survivors, all people, obtain all of the assistance that they are qualified for under the law,” Criswell said.Criswell noted that approximately 20 homes were initially skipped, and teams were sent to those homes immediately after the situation was brought to her attention. The Biden administration is requesting roughly $100 billion from Congress to aid Americans affected by major natural disasters in 2023 and 2024, including hurricanes Helene and Milton. Criswell warned that the agency is running dangerously low.Hurricanes Helene and Milton resulted in over 200 deaths and caused at least $20 billion in damage, according to Associated Press reports.

Sacramento County deputies recover stolen Virgin Mary statue [Video]

A Northern California family is reunited with a statue of the Virgin Mary that was stolen from their home. The homeowner, Kenny Kieu, tracked it down after a sister station KCRA viewer spotted it for sale online.”He found the statue through KCRA that it was being offered on a site called OfferUp, where it was trying to be sold privately. Did some work of his own. And was able to kind of track it to this residence here,” said Sgt. Amar Gandhi with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. After a story aired Sunday night stating the statue had been stolen, Kieu messaged the sellers and alerted deputies to a home on Sheldon Lake Drive. Kieu waited for several hours on Monday as deputies searched the property. “He did the right thing and alerted us. And this is when we got involved. He didn’t try to take any action in his own hands,” Gandhi said. KCRA’s helicopter captured exclusive video of the statue on a trailer, which was partially covered by a tarp on the property.Gandhi said they believe more stolen property could be uncovered from the property.”Right now, the primary focus is the statue. That’s what we have information on right there. If anything else becomes uncovered, that hopefully maybe leads us to some other cases,” Gandhi said. Previous coverage above: Family has Virgin Mary statue stolen from homeAs detectives worked throughout the evening, they arrested two people. The property search lasted for hours. Gandhi said it was necessary in order for Kieu and his family to get justice.”It’s painstaking, but it’s rewarding at the end because, again, it’s all done the right way. He’ll have his property back, and the responsible people will be taken to jail once this is all wrapped up,” Gandhi said. Kieu was eventually allowed to take his Virgin Mary statue home once the investigation wrapped up around 8 p.m. Monday. Kieu thanked KCRA as he drove away with the statue in the bed of his truck.”Feels good. I got it! Thank you,” Kieu said. According to Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the two arrested are facing charges of grand theft. More charges could be coming once a full investigation is wrapped up. Sheriff deputies are still looking for one suspect who was involved in the crime.
