According to reports from the Better Business Bureau, con artists are pretending to be “home energy auditors” who claim they can save you some money.
How it works
You get a phone call, or maybe someone knocks on your door, claiming to be a representative from a utility company or the local government.
They say the group they’re from is offering free home energy audits and services. Scammers may offer to install filters, thermostats, or other equipment; they may even flat-out say you’re eligible for a lower rate. Doing this, they say, will save you money on your energy bills.
