Cleaning out your drains can help prevent flooding [Video]

MONROE, La. (KNOE) – On rainy days, ditches can have trouble draining if there’s litter stuck in them causing flooding issues.

Monroe city officials say if you see any trash to pick it up so it doesn’t get washed into the drain system.

Storm drains are built into the ground to help flow water into the ground or sewage system. Standing water can be an issue leading to flooding.

Monroe City Public Works Director, Sean Benton, said the city makes sure drains flow properly. He said a lot of clogged drains come from ditches around private homes.

“We encourage our homeowners to do their part, and their part is to keep their gutters and stuff clean itself, and at the same time trying to remove any debris that may be in their ditch that may came about from grass clippings or leaves itself,” said Benton.
