A former top Yadkin County student-athlete will be under the “Friday Night Lights” in Surry County this year because Yadkin County Schools wouldn’t allow him to play football if he transferred high schools within the district. In May, Bryson Taylor told his father, Anthony, that he wanted to transfer from Forbush High School to Starmount High School for mental health reasons. Anthony says Bryson endured years of racism at Forbush High School.”I love Forbush, but at the same time, he’s been going through a lot that wasn’t taken care of,” Anthony said.Top Stories1 critically injured after tree falls on vehicle in Davie County, Highway Patrol says Man charged with kidnapping after stealing vehicle with child inside, High Point officers say Student found with gun at Carver High School, no injuries reported, Forsyth County deputies sayGet the latest news stories of interest by clicking hereAnthony said he decided to take care of things himself and the family filed for a ‘Request for Reassignment’ in May. The Yadkin County Board of Education said they approved that request in a June 24 letter. In that same letter approving the request, the Board of Education said Bryson isn’t eligible to play sports for one year after starting at Starmount High. The letter was the first time Anthony said his family ever saw the policy.”This is something they made up,” Anthony said. “No parent was aware. They never sent out any letter, any emails, no documentation to any parent in this county.”WXII 12 Investigates received a copy of the district’s Policy Code 4150, which was adopted in August 2023. It states that “any student who transfers after the start of his or her junior year will not be allowed to participate in athletics for 365 days from the date of transfer.””This was a bill that got put in before school,” Anthony said. “Right before the season started and everything else. A lot of parents don’t know about the 4150.”Yadkin County Schools said this wasn’t a surprise. Superintendent Anthony Davis told 12 Investigates the board did follow protocol last year when notifying families of these changes. Davis says the extent of the racism allegations during Bryson’s time at Forbush High was surprising.”Being racially profiled is one thing, but to continue going on and on and nothing is ever done about it, it makes it hard,” said Bryson’s father.Davis said they handle all reports of racism and bullying seriously, and the claims were not brought up until after Bryson was denied sports. Davis pointed to an email in May for proof. The email provided to 12 Investigates was sent from the head football coach at Forbush High School to Bryson’s mother. The head coach, Jeremy Funderburk, emailed Bryson’s mother, Consileta Taylor, looking for a reson behind Bryson’s exit, calling it a “massive surprise.”Consileta replied to the coach saying Bryson “did not inform of any issues. Nothing has happened. Bryson has high expectations knowing this is his upcoming last year. Bryson has come to realize that he needs to do what is necessary to obtain a full scholarship within academic’s and doing what he loves to do, football.” The email is opposite to the claims being made today.”It’s never been about sports. It’s about my son’s health and getting out of a negative environment and trying to stay in a positive environment,” Anthony said.In the end, Anthony withdrew Bryson from Yadkin County schools and placed him in Mount Airy City Schools for his senior year. Bryson is already practicing with the new district.Watch: NOWCAST streaming newscastsNAVIGATE: Home | Weather | Watch NOWCAST TV | Local News | National | News We Love |
