The man convicted of detonating an explosive device outside of Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall’s office last year has been sentenced on state charges.Kyle Calvert, 26, of Irondale, was convicted of the malicious use of an explosive device in November and sentenced to nine years in federal prison.Kyle Calvert attacked the Alabama Attorney Generals Office with a shrapnel-filled explosive and then fled the scene, but this sentence ensures he will not escape accountability for his crime, said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland following Calvert’s initial sentencing. Acts of violence like this one against our public institutions endanger public servants and entire communities, and they must not be tolerated. I am grateful to the FBI, ATF, and our state and local law enforcement partners for ensuring accountability for this attack, and for the work they do every day to protect our communities. On Friday, after pleading guilty to a Montgomery County indictment, he was sentenced to an additional ten years in prison on the charges of second-degree arson and possession of an explosive device.Mr. Calvert did not simply set off an explosive device at an office buildinghe attacked the state of Alabama and the freedom, liberty, and rule of law that govern all Alabama citizens, said Attorney General Marshall. The Attorney Generals Office is home to nearly two hundred dedicated employees who work tirelessly for this state. They deserve to perform their duties without fear for their safety. Todays sentencing sends a clear message: terrorism against the people of Alabama will not be tolerated.Calvert was charged in connection to the bombing roughly two months after law enforcement responded to reports of an explosion outside of Marshall’s office. No injuries or major damages were reported, but remnants of the device were found at the scene. While the investigation into the explosive device was underway, law enforcement was also looking into “suspicious” stickers that had been placed on several state office buildings near the A.G.’s office, according to court documents filed WednesdaySome of those stickers, which depicted graphics related to varying political ideologies, included the phrase “support your local Antifa.”A detailed investigation by the FBI, which included extensive use of surveillance footage, would later reveal that the stickers were placed by the same person who detonated the explosive device.A deep dive into social media accounts believed to be Calvert’s shows him wearing identical goggles to the ones seen in surveillance footage of the person who placed the suspicious stickers throughout the area.Calvert also posted a detailed video in which he showcases a set of identical stickers that he reportedly purchased from an Australian-based company.Calvert will serve out his state and federal sentences concurrently.
