One woman was just leaving Food Lion Monday morning when she heard gunshots and rushed to her car. What was a routine trip to the grocery store turned terrifying when she realized the suspect ran past her and quickly left the parking lot.Ciera Palmer said she doesn’t normally shop there, but was just picking up milk for her 1-year-old son when the commotion started.”I could see him with the gun in his jacket or whatever. He got away pretty fast,” she said.It was emotional in the parking lot, with other shoppers crying and scared of what they heard. She said she had seen two police cars parked outside the store when she went in, but didn’t think anything of it. I’ve never been in an active shooter situation, it was scary,” Palmer said. “Any stray bullet could have hit anybody.”She said while she was in the store, she didn’t notice anything suspicious while shopping. This shooting, she said, shouldn’t have happened.”Two lives were taken in a few seconds. He’s gone in jail and the officer can’t go home to his family. It’s sad,” Palmer said.The Food Lion on Lawndale Drive remains closed Tuesday, but the roads around it, including exit 8 on 840, have reopened.
