11-year-old sews bandanas for shelter animals to help them get adopted [Video]

WESTPORT, Mass. (WJAR) – An 11-year-old in Massachusetts is doing all she can to help dogs and cats find forever homes.

Malia Martinez is using her newfound sewing skills to craft bandanas for shelter animals in hopes of helping them get adopted.

On a weekly basis in Westport, Malia spends the majority of her time in her grandmother’s home sewing when she isn’t in school.

She said she recently learned how to sew.

“I got a gift certificate for Christmas to go to start sewing lessons,” she said.

Ever since learning, she has been working to perfect her craft, with a bit of help from her grandmother.

“I’m not a sewer,” Crystal Martinez, Malia’s mother, said. “And so my mom has helped her, my mom cuts the fabric out for her. She monitors her, she helps her when she needs to iron the fabric, things like that.”
