Multiple brush fires in Tucson as strong winds stoke fire risk [Video]

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Northwest Fire personnel successfully tempered a two acre brush fire in Tucson on Sunday, May 5.

The fire began between Sunset and River Rd, along La Cholla Blvd, temporarily forcing the street to close. Northwest Fire says it has since reopened.

None of the nearby businesses were damaged by the fire. Its cause is under investigation.

It was Northwest Fire battalion chief Kyle Canty’s third brush fire of the day. “From rains this winter we’ve got a lot of undergrowth,” he told 13 News. “That’s starting to die out, so just a little spark can cause a brush fire to run, especially in this wind.”

He advised the Tucson community to be careful now that seasonal growth has dried up.

The other two fires, one in the Rillito River and another in a residential neighborhood, were put out without incident.

Their causes are also under investigation.
