In the heart of South Valley is an old adobe home with traces of uniquely New Mexican. The family home of Juliana Gutierrez and James Hubbell. “The marriage of Juliana Gutierrez to James Hubbell in 1849 is quite a fascinating moment. Just the year before, in 1848, the U.S signs the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo with Mexico,” David Ottaviano, the site manager at Gutierrez Hubbell House.The home where Juliana established her roots withstanding for more than a century.The family lived there until the mid-90s, when Bernalillo County purchased the home. Ottaviano is now the site manager and the official guide for the house-turned-museum and the unofficial historian for the family. “Generations go back as really the first whites settled in what we now call the south valley around the 1600s,” Ottaviano said.
