MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Senator Brent Taylor passed two bills on Monday to help fight against the juvenile crime problem.
Taylor passed the Parental Accountability Act and the Juvenile Organized Retail Theft Act.
According to Taylor, the Juvenile Organized Retail Theft Act will allow juveniles 15 years of age or older to be transferred to criminal court for smash and grabs, or for stealing firearms from vehicles.
“This bill targets two major crimes we are experiencing in Memphis,” said Taylor. “Smash and grabs are much too frequent and hurt our businesses. The number of car break-ins is unacceptable and fueled by criminals looking to steal guns.”
The Parental Accountability Act allows juvenile court judges to require parents to pay restitution of up to $1,000 for every crime their child commits after being arrested.
