Historic 1,000-year flooding in North Carolina from Potential Cyclone 8 [Video]

Potential Cyclone Eight is bringing historic rainfall to the North Carolina coast, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).NWS officials reported abnormally heavy rainfall across Carolina Beach, Southport, and Boiling Springs Lakes as a tropical system continues to move across the Carolinas.Get the latest weather updates from Potential Cyclone Eight here. The National Weather Service reported more than 18 inches of rain at Ocean Blvd. at Carolina Beach. Other areas reported more than 14 inches of rain as of Monday afternoon. “Multiple volunteer gauges have recorded over a foot of rain since midnight and considerable flash flooding continues to affect roads, homes, and businesses in these areas,” NWS officials said. “NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Atlas 14 shows the climatological return intervals for heavy rain. At (SIC) Carolina Beach, 12 inches of rain in 12 hours is thought to occur, on average, once every 200 years. They said they were later rescued from flood waters. The sheriff’s office also shared a video of flooding on Midway Road earlier Monday morning. Several roads are also washed out in Brunswick County and include East Moore Street and NC 211, according to the sheriff’s office. Carolina Beach and Southport are also getting hit hard by flooding. A pipeline has exploded and is on fire in a Houston suburb, forcing evacuations [Video]

Firefighters were battling a massive pipeline fire in suburban Houston that sparked grass fires and burned power poles on Monday, forcing people in the surrounding neighborhood to evacuate as a giant plume of fire was shooting high up into the air.The fire began at 9:55 a.m. in La Porte, located about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southwest of Houston.La Porte City Secretary Lee Woodward told KTRK-TV that they dont yet know what flows through the pipeline or how it will be shut down.Video images from KTRK showed a park near the fire had been damaged and firefighters pouring water on adjacent homes. There are also several businesses nearby, including a Walmart.Officials have ordered residents in the Brookglen neighborhood area near the fire to evacuate, Lee Woodward, a La Porte city spokesperson said in an email.Please avoid the area and follow law enforcement direction. Further details will be released as available, Woodward said.The cause of the fire was not immediately known.There are several power lines near the fire. The website PowerOutage.us says that there are nearly 4,700 customers without power in Harris County.

Although teams managed to save 95 people trapped in their homes, the bodies of the dead were found in either their houses or yards, Predoiu added.Around 5,400 houses have been damaged in the southeastern region of Galati, which has been hit hardest by the flooding, Antena 3 reported.Residents in one of the regions villages, Pechea, recounted their shock at the devastation wrought by the flooding.
