Flooding splits WNC business in half, leaving owners with nothing [Video]

ANIMALS. 27 YEAR OLD BUSINESS IN CHIMNEY ROCK, NORTH CAROLINA, CONTINUES TO LOOK FOR ANSWERS AFTER THE BUILDING WAS WASHED AWAY DURING HURRICANE HELENE. THE HICKORY NUT ON MEMORIAL HIGHWAY WAS RIPPED IN HALF, WHILE THE BUSINESS OWNERS WERE STILL INSIDE. OUR NATE STANLEY HAS THEIR STORY. THIS IS WHATS LEFT OF THE HICKORY NUT AND CHIMNEY ROCK, NORTH CAROLINA. THE BUSINESS OWNER TELLS ME THAT SHE CAUGHT THE MOMENTS RIGHT BEFORE THIS WAS WASHED AWAY ON CAMERA. YOU GOT TO GO TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. THATS THE ONLY PLACE WE CAN GO. WE WOULD HAVE BEEN STANDING THERE LOOKING OUT THE WINDOW THAT. THATS WHAT WE WERE FILMING. SURREAL MOMENTS AS SHERRY CUMMINGS BUSINESS. THE HICKORY NUT AND HER HOME WERE WASHED AWAY. I LOOKED DOWN, SO MY PHONE WENT LIKE THIS. DOWN TO MY FEET. AND I LOOKED DOWN AND IT WAS OUR REFRIGERATOR ON ITS BACK WITH MAGNETS FLOATING OUT OF THE HOUSE DOWN THE RIVER. OVER A MONTH SINCE HURRICANE HELENE LEFT WITH JUST A FEW REMNANTS FROM HER BUSINESS, CUMMINGS TELLS ME SHES STILL LEFT IN THE DARK BY HER INSURANCE COMPANY. HE CLAIMED THAT WE WERE ONLY LIVING IN 15% OF THE BUILDING. I GUESS BECAUSE HE COULDNT GRASP AT THE STORE WAS ON ONE FLOOR AND THE HOUSE WAS ON THE BOTTOM FLOOR. HE WAS GOING TO GIVE US 15% OF WHAT WE HAD, AND THEN DEPRECIATE THE VALUE. SEE THE DENTS WITH LESS THAN 10% OF HER MERCHANDISE. WE GOT A LONG PIPE AND MAX WOULD HOOK IT, HAND IT OVER TO WHICHEVER ONE OF US, AND WE WOULD PUT THEM INTO BOXES. ALL OF THESE WERE HANGING FROM THE ROOF AND THE ONLY WAY WE COULD GET THE STUFF OUT IS BY PULLING IT AND CARRYING IT OUT THAT WAY. CUMMINGS SET UP A TEMPORARY SHOP AT THE TRYON INTERNATIONAL EQUESTRIAN CENTER. WE WOULD HAVE HAD NO INCOME, NO WAY OF MAKING ANYTHING, ANY KIND OF SUPPORT BILLS. SHES REMAINING OPTIMISTIC THAT RELIEF IS STILL ON THE WAY. ANYBODY A CORPORATION SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY, HOPEFULLY SOMEONE WILL HAVE THE IDEA AND SAY, AND WE CAN FIGURE OUT SOMETHING BECAUSE THATS WHAT WERE GOING TO NEED. YOU GOT TO KEEP GOING TO GET TO THE GOOD. NO MATTER THE WORST THINGS IN YOUR LIFE HAPPEN. AND THAT MOMENT, THEYRE HORRIBLE. AND YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOURE GOING TO DO. BUT IF YOU KEEP GOING, YOURE GOING TO GET TO THE NEXT DOOR AND CUMMINGS TELLS ME THAT TOMORROW SHE WILL HAVE MEMBERS OF THE ENGINEERS CORPS HERE TO ASSESS THE DAMAGE. REPORTING IN CHIMN

QUALITY TESTS AS RESTORATION AND CLEANUP EFFORTS ARE STILL ONGOING ACROSS WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA. AFTER HELENE, SOME LOCAL BUSINESS OWNERS SAY THEYRE READY FOR TOURISM TO MAKE A COMEBACK. METEOROLOGIST GRIFFIN HARDY REPORTS FROM HENDERSON COUNTY. MANY LOCAL BUSINESSES ACROSS WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA WERE HEAVILY IMPACTED BY HURRICANE HELENE JUST BEFORE WHAT NORMALLY IS THE PEAK OF TOURISM SEASON, BUT ONE LOCAL VINEYARD OWNER HERE IN HENDERSON COUNTY IS ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO STILL COME. I WAS TELLING OUR TEAM, ITS KIND OF LIKE I WAS IN A DREAM SEQUENCE FOR THE PAST TWO WEEKS, AND NOW IM WAKING UP. TIMOTHY PARKS OF MARKED TREE VINEYARDS SAYS OCTOBER IS NORMALLY THEIR BUSIEST MONTH OF THE YEAR FOR TOURISTS, AND THAT ITS IMPORTANT FOR THOSE THAT CAN TO GET BACK TO A SMALL SENSE OF NORMALCY. PLEASE COME AND SUPPORT SOME OF THE SMALL BUSINESSES SO THAT WAY WE CAN START TO STABILIZE OUR COMMUNITY. SO THAT OTHER COMMUNITIES CAN BE HELPED, THAT ARE IN MORE DIRE NEED. DANIELLE MCCALL OF STEPS, HILLCREST, ORCHARD SAYS HER ORCHARD IS MOSTLY OKAY AFTER THE STORM, BUT REMAINS INACCESSIBLE BY ROAD. TIMOTHY HAS BEEN HELPING HER OUT BY LETTING HER SELL PRODUCT AT HIS VINEYARD. SHE ALSO SAYS THE EASIEST WAY TO HELP IS BY STILL ENCOURAGING TOURISM TO THOSE WANTING TO MAKE A TRIP SAFELY. WHEN POSSIBLE, TO THE MOUNTAINS. THIS FALL. FOR US, IT MAY MEAN MAYBE WERE OPEN LATER IN THE SEASON THIS YEAR THAN WE NORMALLY WOULD BE. AND THATS THE OTHER THING I WOULD SAY. IF YOU CANT COME, IF YOU CAN COME THIS WEEKEND, COME ON. IF YOU CANT COME LATER, THIS MONTH, COME IN NOVEMBER, EVEN IF YOU WOULDNT NORMALLY DO THAT, COME IN DECEMBER. THERES LOTS OF THINGS TO ENJOY IN HENDERSON COUNTY FOR THE REST OF 2024. ITS STILL GORGEOUS HERE. THERE ARE PLACES OPEN. PLEASE COME SUPPORT. SO THAT WE CAN HELP SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY.
