HAWARDEN, IA (KTIV) – More than four months ago historic flooding hit northwest Iowa and southeast South Dakota hard damaging or destroying countless homes and businesses. That included the “Route 10 Drive-In” in Hawarden, Iowa.
Scott and Jennifer Schwade took a chance and bought the drive-in when they moved to Hawarden in 2022. After they remodeled the restaurant, the drive-in re-opened, and business was booming. But, historic flooding from the Big Sioux River, in June, damaged the drive-in forcing them to rebuild.
The Schwade’s say they lost between $300,000 and $500,000 in damage following the flooding. Now the restaurant is inching closer to reopening with the help of the community.
Owners Scott and Jennifer Schwade are in the process of rebuilding and remodeling the drive-in. The community of Hawarden has lent a helping hand in the recovery.
