MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Tonight, a world record could be broken right here on the Gulf Coast.
Planting okra in their home garden started as a new hobby for Mobile residents Terry and Candace Stevens, but it quickly grew much bigger.
“Actually, this is our first year planting,” Stevens said. “I think we started in March, and we started in seeds from my shed, and we transferred them out here, and they’ve just been growing ever since.”
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Jack Reno Sweeney of New Orleans currently holds the world record for his okra plant, which stands at 16 feet 4 inches.
Stevens tells me he immediately rooted for his plant to get just as tall.
Byrd Surveying crew traveled to Stevens’ home to tell him his plant has Sweeney beat by 6 inches, with his plant standing at 16 feet 10 inches.
