After a long wait, the New England Patriots have announced who their starting quarterback will be for Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals. New Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo informed the team early Thursday morning that veteran Jacoby Brissett would be the starter to open the season.
ESPN insiders Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler broke the news on social media.
Brissett wins the quarterback competition over rookie Drake Maye. Despite Maye putting together a strong preseason run, the Patriots elected to go with the veteran to start the year.
New England will now go forward with Maye as the backup but he will likely get some playing time this season. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft is the future of the Patriots so his time will be coming.
