The city of Dubai has ground to a halt following torrential rains that dumped the entire year’s rainfall in just 24 hours. With schools closed and employees instructed to work from home due to flooded underground car parks, the metro services have also been disrupted after two days of relentless downpours. Dubai International Airport, one of the world’s busiest, faces significant disruptions, with flights diverted or delayed for several hours.

Tragedy struck neighbouring Oman as well, where 19 people, including school children, lost their lives to floods caused by days of consecutive rainfall, according to local media reports.

Media reports have linked the flooding to cloud seeding activities regularly undertaken by Dubai to address its freshwater needs. In this practice, aeroplanes disperse chemicals and particles, such as potassium chloride salts, into rain clouds to enhance precipitation.
