Residents of the Salem Garden Apartments say they need help following infrastructure issues and renovations that have left some of them displaced. One woman said she is frustrated and she has been living in a hotel for over a month. “All of these apartments had structural damage, infrastructure issues, mold,” said Lachaundria Hairston. “We have holes. We have water damage. The water drains through the pipes, through the venting systems, onto our floors.” Hairston, who has lived in the neighborhood since 2020, added that being displaced has caused some kids who live here to miss school due to problems with bus pickups, prompting parents to find alternatives. “It’s been a lot of parents carpooling,” she said. “It’s been a lot of parents trying to put together funds so we can afford gas to get back and forth. The issues have prompted some residents to appeal to city leaders. Watch: NOWCAST streaming newscasts”A lot of the residents have been coming back to apartments that are substandard,” said Samuel Gavurin at a Winston-Salem City Council meeting Tuesday night. WXII reached out to Councilwoman Annette Scippio, who oversees the East Ward where the apartments are located. She wasnt available for an on-camera interview, but she said she has been in contact with residents and the property managers to understand how the city can help.
