Long lines, high voter turnout in Maine [Video]

Many Mainers stood in long lines to cast their votes for president Tuesday, including in Windham.”Yesterday went well; it was really busy,” Town Clerk Linda Morrell said. She added that members of her community really like to get out and vote. Four years ago, 11,600 people voted in the general election in Windham. On Tuesday, 11,595 voted. She said it wasn’t voter turnout but instead the 17-inch long ballots. “When each voter has three ballots to put through, it takes a little bit of time,” Morrell said.Windham wasn’t the only place that saw these long lines. In Lisbon, people were in line for more than an hour after the polls closed just to cast their ballots. In Readfield, the tabulators went down twice. Maine’s Total Coverage asked Secretary of State Shenna Bellows if this means the state needs to modernize elections.”I’ve already modernized our elections in a couple key ways,” Bellows said. She then pointed to online voter registration and automatic voter registration through the Bureau of Motor Vehicles.”That being said, there are other aspects of our election that we do the old-fashioned way. Some of it is for security we have that paper ballot which is the gold standard of election security,” Bellows said.Cities and towns have two days to get their election results to the secretary of state’s office. Then, the secretary of state has 20 days to get those results to Gov. Janet Mills for her certification.
