Prosecutors have filed charges against two teenagers accused of an armed carjacking in Milwaukee that led to an attempted carjacking and shooting in West Allis Friday.Seventeen-year-old Gregory Edwards-Hemphill and 18-year-old Brandin Ballard face counts of armed carjacking and first-degree recklessly endangering safety. Ballard has also been charged with bail jumping and possession of a firearm by an adjudicated delinquent.According to the criminal complaint, someone reported they had their 2015 black Jeep Cherokee stolen at gunpoint near 32nd Street and Forest Home Avenue around 5:30 a.m.That same morning, Ben Singleton was sitting in his car near 66th Street and Hayes Avenue when two young men tried to break in.”As he opened up my door I said, ‘Hey, what’s going on?’ He was like, ‘Oh, I’m sorry, bro, I’m sorry, I’m sorry.’ And as he’s trying to get into my car, there’s another guy trying to get into my girlfriend’s car,” Singleton said.The suspects left the area in the black Jeep; Singleton said he ran inside the house to grab his handgun before following them in his 2016 red Mazda 6. The complaint said Singleton saw the suspects in the Jeep trying to break into cars near 65th Street and Hayes Avenue. Singleton pulled up alongside the passenger window and yelled, Hey man, get out of the neighborhood stealing cars.The suspects crashed into another car before exiting the vehicle and shooting at Singleton, according to the document. The gunfire hit Singleton’s car and other vehicles in the neighborhood; the pair ran off but were caught by police a few blocks away.Edwards-Hemphill told investigators he and Ballard stole the Jeep earlier that morning in Milwaukee and were driving around in it, breaking into other cars. After Singleton confronted them, Edwards-Hemphill told police “the victim displayed a firearm” before they crashed the Jeep and started shooting. According to the complaint, “Edwards-Hemphill admitted to taking apart the firearm, disposing of clothing, and running from police to get away.” When this incident happened, online court records show Ballard was out on $700 bond for an April criminal case where he’s accused of bail jumping and threatening someone with a gun.
