Lawyers say Boston body cam video shows excessive force used on peaceful protestors

THROUGH ALL THE VIDEO. MIKE, WHAT HAVE YOU SEEN? ED. WE SPOKE WITH THE ATTORNEYS REPRESENTING FOUR PEOPLE WHO WERE IN DOWNTOWN BOSTON BACK IN MAY 2020 FOR A DEMONSTRATION AFTER GEORGE FLOYD WAS KILLED. THEY CALLED THEIR CLIENTS PEACEFUL PROTESTERS, WHO THEY SAY WERE ATTACKED BY BOSTON POLICE. AND IT WAS CAPTURED ON VIDEO FROM HOME. THESE VIDEOS SHOW SOME OF THE FOUR PEOPLE SUING THE CITY OF BOSTON AND THREE POLICE OFFICERS OVER WHAT HAPPENED ON MAY 31ST, 2020. SO THERES A LOT OF VIDEO IN THIS CASE. IM BACKING UP, IM BACKING DOWN, IM BACKING UP. IM LISTENING TO YOU, AND YOURE FRAME ME. THREE OF THEM WERE HIT WITH BATONS, ONE IN THE FACE. TWO. TWO OF THE OTHERS WERE KNOCKED OFF THEIR FEET WITH BATONS. WHAT? IT STARTED OUT PEACEFUL EARLIER IN THE DAY. ESCALATED INTO VIOLENCE AND LOOTING THAT NIGHT, LEADING TO DOZENS OF ARRESTS. BUT THE ATTORNEYS SAY THE POLICE WENT TOO FAR, PAINTING EVERYONE, INCLUDING PEACEFUL PROTESTERS WITH THE SAME BROAD BRUSH. YES, OF COURSE. ARREST THE PEOPLE WHO ARE ENGAGED IN MISCONDUCT. IF THEY RESIST, THEN OBVIOUSLY, YOU KNOW, REASONABLE AMOUNT OF FORCE IS WHATS ALLOWED. BUT ALLOWING OFFICERS TO USE FORCE CARTE BLANCHE ON ANYBODY WHO IS AT A PROTEST, AS WE ARGUE, VIOLATES THE LAW. THEY WERE AUTHORIZING OFFICERS TO USE FORCE ON ANYONE WHO REMAINED, EVEN THOUGH THEY HADNT BEEN TOLD THEY HAD TO LEAVE OR GIVEN AWAY TO LEAVE. ATTORNEY MARK REYES SAYS HIS CLIENTS ARE STILL IMPACTED BY WHAT UNFOLDED THAT NIGHT. THEY TESTIFIED IN THEIR DEPOSITIONS ABOUT HOW IT MAKES THEM MORE FEARFUL OF POLICE WHENEVER THEY SEE THEM. JENNIFER ATTORNEY, HOWARD FRIEDMAN, SAYS THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND ITS OFFICERS NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE. IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A WELL-RUN DEPARTMENT, YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT. YOU HAVE TO DISCIPLINE OFFICERS. YOU HAVE TO LET THEM KNOW YOU CANT DO THAT BECAUSE THERE WILL BE OTHER PROTESTS. BOSTON POLICE SAY THEY WONT COMMENT ON PENDING LITIGATION. TODAYS COURT FILING IS PART OF THE BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE TWO SIDES. THE PLAINTIFFS ARE ASKING THE COURT TO LET THE CASE GO TO A TRIA
