Presidential candidates make pitch to auto workers, Arab Americans in Michigan [Video]

Early voting kicks off in Detroit on Saturday, with more cities soon to follow, as presidential candidates make their final push in Michigan. Both campaigns crisscrossed the swing state on Friday and made appeals to key constituencies, including auto workers and Arab Americans. At a rally in Detroit, former President Donald Trump said global trade deals drove manufacturing jobs overseas. He pledged to bring them back by imposing steep tariffs on imported cars.”Vote Trump and you will see a mass exodus of manufacturing jobs from Mexico to Michigan, from Shanghai to Sterling Heights,” Trump said.Vice President Kamala Harris made an appearance at the United Auto Workers Local 652 hall in Lansing and rallied in Grand Rapids. She warned Trump would undermine collective bargaining and other worker protections. “No matter what the noise is out there, he is no friend of labor. Just look at the record instead of his rhetoric,” Harris said.At another event in Oakland County, Harris made a direct appeal to Arab Americans amid signs Democratic support from this group is slipping compared to past presidential elections. Many members of the community have raised concerns about the Biden-Harris administrations support for Israels offensive in Gaza following Hamas Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel. I know this year has been very difficult given the scale of death and destruction in Gaza and given the civilian casualties and displacement in Lebanon, Harris said. Harris added Israels killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar can and must be a turning point.Everyone must seize this opportunity to finally end the war in Gaza, bring the hostages home and end the suffering once and for all,” Harris said. “I continue to believe diplomacy is the answer to bringing lasting stability across the Israel Lebanon border.” Trump said Sinwar was not a good person. He told reporters his death will make peace in the region easier, though he also criticized President Joe Biden for trying to hold back Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by advocating for a ceasefire deal. Trump, looking to seize on frustration over the war, paid a visit Friday to one of the nation’s only Muslim-majority cities, where he won the endorsement of Hamtramcks Democratic Mayor Amer Ghalib. “I mean frankly it’s an honor. I have a lot of endorsements from Arab Americans,” Trump said. “I don’t think they’re going to be voting for because she doesn’t know what she is doing. Three city council members in the same town have endorsed Harris.Michigan is one of three states, alongside Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, that make up the so-called blue wall. Trump swept those states in 2016 but Biden took them back in 2020. If Harris can hold on to the same Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin wall that Biden held she is very likely to become president but the road gets very steep for her if she loses some of these states, said political analyst Marc Sandalow.
