KIMBERLY — Four firefighters from the Rock Creek Fire District have arrived in California to fight wildfires there and have seen the devastation they expected to see.
“Lots of homes damaged or destroyed,” Lt. Taylor Hunsaker told the Times-News in an email.
The group, a mix of full-time and professional firefighters, left Idaho on Jan. 9, and has been assigned to to work on the Palisades Fire in southern California.
Wildfires across the Los Angeles area have ravaged about 60 square miles and killed at least 27 people, reports say, along with burning 12,000 structures.
Hunsaker said he knew it would be a humbling experience as he started the trip after fire officials mobilized Idaho firefighters to help with the effort.
“Everyone down here has been great to work with and work for,” he said. “The people of California have been nothing but amazing to us” through the chaos.
