BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The Birmingham Water Works Board says you may get a letter next week from the utility about the potential for having lead issues in your home.
The BWWB says just because you get a letter doesn’t mean you have a problem. This is part of a new federal rule that requires water utilities to get an accurate count of how many customers have lead pipes in your homes and let you know how to minimize your exposure.
The letters will be going primarily to homes built before 1989, and the water works may be asking you to check your lines running from the street to your home and report back to them.
If you do have a lead service line, there are several options to minimize your risk, including:
- Free water filter pitchers that will be provided for free by Birmingham Water Works.
