U.S. official visits UMaine 3D home as they look to enhance affordable housing options | News [Video]

ORONO — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Assistant Secretary for Congressional and Intergovernmental Relations visited the University of Maine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center on Thursday. This comes as the university strives to be a national model for manufacturing affordable housing with their 3D printed home.

The center is continuing to attract notice from the federal government over their efforts to produce manufactured homes.

“It’s just really a great opportunity to see all the work that Maine is doing to really address the housing shortages,” said Dr. Kimberly A. McClain, Asst. Secretary for Congressional and Intergovernmental Relations. 

The university unveiled the world’s first bio-based 3D printed home, BioHome3D, back in 2022. 

Now they are looking to expand that with their latest pilot program that aims to build nine single-family homes for low-income families in the Bangor area.
