The biopic is a standard genre of both television and movies. One of the major elements that determines its success is if the actors playing the subjects are up to the job.

Britbox’s miniseries Archie: The Man Who Became Cary Grant was released at the end of last year. Jason Isaacs plays the legendary actor Cary Grant as he meets and falls for Dyan Cannon (Laura Aiken). The audience is then taken back to his tumultuous childhood and his early years in show business.

I’ve only seen one episode so far, but I am impressed. Isaacs is Grant. Of the many portrayals of real people that modern actors have played over the years, this one is near the top of the list. The accent, the tan, the charisma, it’s all there. But underneath that is a child whose early years were painful and far from ideal.

Do I recommend it? Absolutely.
