DETROIT (WXYZ) – Lithium-ion batteries have become a staple in our daily lives.
They power everything from toys to smartphones to electric vehicles.
The batteries are convenient but improper use and storage can lead to serious hazards.
“Lithium-ion batteries or anything to do with solar panels on houses, I mean all of this it just creates a unique challenge for all of us,” said Ferndale Fire Department Chief Teresa Robinson.
While many homeowners trust lithium battery-operated devices, Keith Lehman and his wife have a different story.
Lehman went to work on Oct. 8 and was completely unaware of what he would come home to.
“All my tools of course were melted to nothing,” he said.
Lehman thought his electric lawn equipment batteries were safe even while left on the charger.
