Portland painter Orlando Almanza was born in the Cuban countryside and spent his childhood listening to his grandfathers stories of the spirits that lived in the forests and river near their home. When he moved to Havana to attend the college of fine arts, he buried his past, attempting to fit into the citys urban culture. But eventually he discovered these childhood stories carry great power. Today his large, lush canvases are filled with images from his past and the myths and stories he heard from his family.

Schatz seeks additional disaster relief when Congress returns in November : Maui Now [Video]

US Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) called for additional disaster relief funding when Congress returns in November. Speaking on the Senate floor, Schatz stressed the need to provide disaster survivors on Maui and in other disaster-impacted communities with flexible, long-term assistance in the form of Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funding. The said this will enable them to rebuild their homes and communities as quickly as possible.
