We’re getting answers after a man’s body was left behind for months at a Kansas City Funeral Home. Hardy’s Eternal Rest Funeral Home is going on month four of silence from the family of 83-year-old Charles Freeman. “After 35 years in the funeral industry, I have never had this happen, so it’s kind of like a shock to me,” owner Michael Hardy said. Freeman’s body has been lying at the funeral home since July. “This is just me going on too long, and I think Mr. Freeman deserves better than that,” Hardy said. Hardy said Freeman’s son originally called the funeral home to pick his father’s body up from a hospital.He hasn’t heard from him or any family members since.”Even if you would just call and say, call me and say, ‘Mr. Hardy, listen, here’s all the information you need. let me give you $5, $6 or $8 or something.’ But just abandon your father, that’s unacceptable,” Hardy said. There’s no death certificate or cause of death because the funeral home needs Freeman’s Social Security number to complete the final paperwork.”Who would abandon their loved one and just forget about him?” Hardy said. Hardy is pleading to anyone in his family to give them a call and help Charles Freeman reach his final resting place. “Give us a call, come in, do something. You know, and I’m willing to work with anyone,” Hardy said.Freeman’s birthday is Nov. 29.The funeral home says he is from Kansas City, but moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, before coming back to Kansas City.

Hollie Doyle has returned to her home country after a successful two-month stint in Japan, where she rode 13 winners from 101 mounts. The arrival of the new year means one thing: the number of winners was dialled back to zero, and the hard work behind the scenes begins again.As someone who doesn’t crave the limelight, Doyle is modest, reserved, and always the ultimate professional. It is fair to say that acknowledging her success doesn’t come naturally, but since 2019 she has ridden more than 100 winners in each year, with a career high of 172 in 2021. She finished in the top three jockeys in Britain between 2020 and 2022, and one of her closest rivals is her husband Tom Marquand.Doyle’s former weighing-room colleague Georgia Cox catches up with the leading female rider, whose Group 1 wins in 2023 came aboard Bradsell (GB), Nashwa (GB) and Trueshan (Fr), and who has four winners on the board already this year.The Japanese fans look like they could elevate any race day. How did it feel to be a part of that atmosphere?The fans are unbelievable. It’s quite incomparable to anywhere else I’ve been. Their love and respect for the horse is on a different level. The merchandise the JRA provides is incredible and the fans are able to purchase turfies which are replicas of their favourite horses. After you’ve ridden a winner, you spend a long time signing autographs and merchandise for them. If I was in the next race, I’d feel guilty that I had to go and couldn’t sign everyone’s, as they are so keen and passionate. I remember walking out of Nakayama on the last day and there were hundreds of people queued up for Tom and I to sign things. It’s very sweet, the fans themselves are in it for the right reasons.How were the local trainers in welcoming you as an overseas rider?The local trainers are generally very good working with overseas riders. The trainer you’re based with isn’t necessarily your biggest supporter. This year I was associated with Hiroyasu Tanaka, the trainer of Lemon Pop (Lemon Drop Kid). He’s a young and up-and-coming trainer who spent a lot of time in France. I have a really good relationship with him, and he threw as many rides as he could at me. However, they have their own jockeys as well, who they are very loyal to. I had to prove myself even more after last year, not getting that many winners, but this year back in June I picked up the ride on Italian 1,000 Guineas winner Shavasana (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) to win the G2 Oaks d’Italia for trainer Stefano Botti and Katsumi Yoshida, who is also the owner of Northern Farms, which 12 of my 13 winners were for. It’s like everything it’s all about building contacts. To be able to partner Vela Azul (Jpn) (Eishin Flash {Jpn}) in the G1 Japan Cup was a huge opportunity, as was winning on Vibraphone (Jpn) (Drefong) for Noboru Takagi, the trainer of 2023 Dubai World Cup winner Ushba Tesoro (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}). It’s a huge step forward on last year’s results and I hope to keep building on that.Tom was attached to Keisuke Miyata, who was the rider of Almond Eye (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) for many years, and he’s been with him for two years now. He has always made us feel apart of his team and tried to support us as much as he could.In the past few seasons, you’ve been able to sample racing in a variety of districts, from Australia to America, Japan, and Hong Kong. That must have been a huge eye-opener. If you could introduce something they do to racing over here, what would it be?There is so much we could take from the way the Japanese have built their domain. We have a lot to envy when it comes to the logistics of racing in Japan, starting from how the betting turnover goes straight back into the prize-money. They don’t cut corners and they appreciate the long game, investing in middle-distance horses, which they are now reaping the benefits from. For anyone who hasn’t been it’s one to put on the bucket list.You’ve ridden in a variety of countries. Is there anywhere you haven’t been to yet that you want to experience?Since I started, I have always stuck around for the winters to keep the ball rolling through the all-weather season, but the last two winters I’ve travelled and found it to be a realisation of what more racing has to offer. It’s something that I want to explore further. I really enjoy adjusting to the different styles as you see with Ryan Moore, the way he seamlessly fits into anywhere when he is riding around the world. If the opportunity came up, I’d definitely like to go back and do a stint in Australia and Hong Kong at some point.You’ve moved up the ranks within the weighing-room. Has much changed for you?A lot has changed but my hunger and drive is bigger than ever. I suppose the only good thing about getting older is the experience you carry, which is worth so much, on and off the track. It’s a fast-moving sport and it doesn’t take much to fall by the wayside. The fear of that is what keeps me on the ball 24/7.Can you give us an insight into your mindset?I’m quite used to the manic lifestyle now. Chaos is my stability, and my stability is chaos. That state of mind is the norm for me. If I have a day off, I have to do something, whether that’s a bike ride, gym session, or swimming. If not, I feel like I’m doing a disservice to the owners that I’m riding for the next day. It’s just how it works in my mind. If I stopped, I think I’d become disorientated.Mentality and resilience are two of the biggest things that have got me to this stage.Is bloodstock something you want to be more involved with?I’m intrigued by the bloodstock side of things, and that’s definitely amplified since being retained by Imad Al Sagar, owner of Blue Diamond Stud. Analysing their pedigrees, getting to know the families, and seeing the traits they pass down the generations. I really enjoy seeing them as foals and then what they grow into. Seeing it first-hand intensifies how much thought goes into it, and the attention to detail isn’t wasted on me. I have a huge amount of respect for any owner-breeder; it’s a long, expensive game, and they deserve all the success they get.You have had much success with trainer Archie Watson: 228 winners and counting. We can see from the outside that he is driven and meticulous in placing his horses. What can you see on the inside that leads to the constant flow of winners?When I started working alongside Archie, everything accelerated into a different stratosphere. I understand the way he trains, I understand his horses, and how to get the best out of them and do the best job for their owner. I think he is particularly good at getting their all-important black-type on their CV, or just getting the best out of every horse, whatever level that might be at.Do you have championship dreams?I think I was born competitive as it’s all I can ever remember. I love a challenge, and the challenge of becoming a champion jockey is every jockey’s dream, finishing joint-second and third in the table the last few years has meant a lot. I’m lucky to be supported by so many good outfits that train winners for fun. The simple question of ‘will you be going for champion jockey this year?’ can feel sometimes antagonising, as you never have your foot off the pedal, with permanent blinkers fixed on riding as many winners as possible. It’s not like I’m holding back; this is full throttle.You’ve been around some of the best in the business. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?Keep your head down and work hard.

At least two people have died and hundreds have been rescued in Roswell, New Mexico, according to the New Mexico State Police, after extreme overnight rainfall brought severe flooding, stranding motorists and sweeping away cars.The New Mexico National Guard and other agencies have rescued at least 290 people, including 38 who were taken to hospitals, the agency confirmed in a statement.No details have been released about the confirmed fatalities. Crews are still out there and rescue efforts are still underway, New Mexico State Police Officer Amanda Richards told CNN Sunday afternoon.The National Weather Service declared an overnight flash flood emergency for Roswell and nearby areas, as emergency management within Chaves County reported numerous water rescues. Additionally, a flood watch has been issued for a large portion of eastern New Mexico, effective until early Monday morning. More warnings may be issued as the situation is monitored for the possibility of a flash flood emergency.The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) indicates that rainfall rates could reach between 1.5 and 2 inches per hour throughout the region. While the severe storm threat has diminished for the Roswell area, it persists for eastern and northeastern New Mexico until Monday morning.Video below: Caught on Camera: Dramatic rooftop rescue from flooding in RoswellThe weather service also warned widespread showers and storms would continue through Sunday in central and eastern New Mexico and will bring the risk of large hail, damaging wind gusts, tornadoes, and both flash flooding and river flooding, especially in the Roswell area.Roswell recorded 5.78 of rainfall Saturday, which set a record for any date, surpassing the prior mark of 5.65 set Nov. 1, 1901, according to the National Weather Service. It also broke the daily record set in 1983 and is four times the regions average October rainfall.The Spring River in the Cahoon area rose to dangerous levels, stranding several vehicles under bridges along the river, with water entering homes in the area. Water levels have since receded in some areas, but remain high in downtown Roswell and throughout town along the Spring River channel, according to the city.Many motorists became stranded when their vehicles got stuck in flood waters on many streets, the City of Roswell said in a statement. Some people had to await rescue on top of their vehicles that were covered by water. Some vehicles were swept by the water into the river channel. One fatality has been confirmed as a result of the flooding. Search-and-rescue efforts are still underway this morning.Video below: Chaves County sheriff becomes stranded in floodVideos posted by Chaves County Sheriff Mike Herrington show him standing on top of his vehicle on Sunday around midnight, surrounded by floodwaters that swept his car away along with other stranded vehicles. Peoples houses and cars flooded, Herrington says in the videos, which also show floodwater rescues.We feel for the New Mexicans affected by this latest flooding in our state, said Maj. Gen. Miguel Aguilar, the New Mexico National Guards adjutant general. Because of the previous flooding in Ruidoso, we have the experience and were ready for this. Weve worked all night, and continue to work with swift water rescue teams and other partner agencies to help our fellow citizens get to safety.The Guards Community Emergency Response Team performed at least one swiftwater rope rescue overnight, a skill they were trained in as a result of the Ruidoso floods, the National Guard said, adding they will remain on duty to help the city as long as necessary.State police officers were able to locate and rescue a family of seven surrounded by floodwaters on Twin Bluff Road in Roswell, the department said in a post on X.In a video recorded on Facebook, the Chaves County Sheriffs Office warned against driving over water, as it has caused severe damage to local roadways.The asphalt has been eaten away, Undersheriff Charles Yslas said as he showed broken asphalt on a damaged roadway and huge puddles.You just dont know what the road looks like underneath the water. Thats why were asking everybody to please stay home, Yslas said in the video. Its not worth your life to try to take pictures.He explained the force of the water is tremendous, evidenced by a camper seen in the video in the middle of a field off the roadway.The Roswell Air Center, an airport near the city, is closed and flights were canceled for Sunday and Monday because of the storm, flooding and debris, officials announced on Facebook. An assessment will be done Monday morning to determine if flights can resume by the afternoon, the post read.The ordeal has also led to the closure of other city facilities such as the Recreation and Aquatic Center, the Spring River Zoo, the public library, the local museum, the convention center, a golf course and a cemetery until further notice.City officials asked residents to stay off the streets as response efforts continue and some areas remain dangerous.A shelter is available to Roswell residents who are affected by the flooding and need to evacuate.Roadways into Roswell are shut down. Residents may leave but will not be able to reenter, Richards said. Those who do decide to leave cannot use Highway 285.

Hurricane Oscars arrival to eastern Cuba Sunday has impacted millions of residents already facing days without power, as fresh attempts to restore much of the nations electric grid have failed.In the capital city of Havana early Monday, people were seen outdoors in poor lighting, a few playing dominoes to kill time. Children are opting to sleep outside to cool off from the stifling heat indoors schools have also been canceled until Thursday.Oscar made landfall near Baracoa along Cubas eastern shores around Sunday afternoon as a Category 1 storm with winds of 80 mph. By Sunday night, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) announced that Oscar had weakened to a tropical storm and was moving toward the west-southwest of the country at 6 mph.Through Wednesday morning, rainfall amounts of 6 to 12 inches with isolated amounts of 18 inches are expected across eastern Cuba, the NHC said, adding that as much as 8 inches of rain will appear in isolated amounts in the southeast Bahamas.Earlier Oscar made landfall on Inagua Island in The Bahamas, with maximum estimated sustained winds of 80 mph, the NHC said.On Sunday afternoon the Cuban Electrical Union announced that more than 216,000 people in Havana, a city of 2 million, had power restored. The power grid collapsed again later in the day for the fourth time since Friday.Some Cubans have taken to the streets, to protest the three-day-long blackout many banging pots and pans and disrupting traffic.Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel criticized demonstrators for causing public disorder, saying in a video posted on X that we are not going to allow acts of vandalism and much less alter the tranquillity of our people.Cuba descended into darkness on Friday, when one of the countrys major power plants failed, according to the Energy Ministry. Since then, most people in the 10 million-strong country have had their access to power interrupted, while also struggling to maintain fresh food and a steady supply of water.Havana residents queue for breadSome people began flooding WhatsApp chats with updates on which areas had power, while others arranged to store medications in the fridges of those who briefly had power or were lucky enough to have a generator.In Havana, residents waited for hours to buy a few loaves from the handful of locations selling bread in the capital. When the bread sold out, several people argued angrily that they had been skipped in line.Many wondered aloud where Cubas traditional allies were, such as Venezuela, Russia and Mexico. Until now, they had been supplying the island with badly needed barrels of oil to keep the lights on.Meanwhile, tourists were still seen circling Havanas main avenues in classic 1950s cars, although many hotel generators had run out of fuel.One foreign visitor told CNN that Havanas Jos Mart International Airport was operating in the dark on emergency power only, adding that printers did not work to issue tickets and there was no air conditioning in the terminal.Reuters reporters witnessed two small protests overnight into Sunday, while videos of protests elsewhere in the capital have also surfaced.The Cuban government is cancelling classes for students from Monday until Wednesday, having previously cancelled them on Friday. It has also instructed non-essential workers to stay home. The U.S. Embassy in Havana will be open only for emergency services on Monday.Cuban officials have blamed the energy crisis on a confluence of events, from increased U.S. economic sanctions to disruptions caused by recent hurricanes and the impoverished state of the islands infrastructure.In a televised address on Thursday that was delayed by technical difficulties, Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz said much of the countrys limited production was stopped to avoid leaving people completely without power.We have been paralyzing economic activity to generate (power) to the population, he said.The countrys health minister, Jos Angel Portal Miranda, said Friday on X that the countrys health facilities were running on generators and that health workers continued to provide vital services.
