The Kenosha Unified School District School Board held a special board meeting Tuesday night. Several parents showed up and voiced serious safety concerns they have for their children days after a school shooting scare. “You guys had one job, and you guys failed,” Christina Delgado, a parent, said.Police say a 13-year-old former student entered Roosevelt Elementary School last Thursday wearing a backpack and carrying a duffel bag. Surveillance video shows the teen speaking with two school staff members before leaving the building and walking off school property. Police arrested the teen at his house, where they found several air-soft guns. Police said the teen had a concerning search history, including searches about school shootings. “We can definitely tell he’s been obsessed with looking into these type of things, repetitive searches about this type of behavior. It seems like it was something that just grew over time until he actually executed it,” Kenosha Police Chief Patrick Patton said in an interview with WISN 12 News Tuesday.School staff buzzed the teen in to a secure entrance portion of Roosevelt Elementary School. It is designed so that there are two sets of doors, including a front office. It keeps school visitors confined to a secure area when they enter the building. The secured entrance is part of what kept the boy from having access to classrooms and students last week.”Having that kind of like double secured entrance was pivotal in keeping the kids safe. But there’s still quite a few schools in the district that don’t have those types of entrances,” said Christine Taylor, a KUSD parent. Multiple parents at Tuesday’s meeting pushed for the security measure to be added to all of KUSD’s buildings.”If you’re asking parents, nothing else matters until we know our kids are safe at school,” Amanda Dreifke said. Dreifke is a parent and a teacher in the district. She started an online petition, asking the district to implement the same secured entrance Roosevelt Elementary School has in all of the district’s schools. “For the safety of our children we are asking that all Kenosha Unified Schools be equipped with secure entrances and occupied with a trained security liaison at the main entrance,” Dreifke said. Seven out of the district’s 40 buildings aren’t currently equipped with a secured entrance, where there are two sets of doors and a secured vestibule or front office area.”Our own superintendent stated in the email to us parents that the secured entrance at Roosevelt was pivotal in keeping the kids safe last Thursday. So it’s time to make sure that all schools have them,” Taylor said.KUSD Superintendent Dr. Jeff Weiss declined to speak with WISN 12 News on camera Tuesday night, but did say adding the secured entrances to the remaining buildings is something the school board is looking into. The board is considering bringing a $12.5 million referendum to fund the construction of the entrances.

There was a time when Walgreens stores were popping up all over town, but that time has clearly passed.Just last month, a south side Walgreens abruptly closed at Layton Boulevard and National Avenue. Now, WISN 12 News has learned two north side Walgreens are meeting the same fate. The stores at 91st Street and Appleton Avenue and MLK and Hadley Street are now part of the chain’s restructuring. The Appleton Avenue store is closing Dec. 3, and the MLK store on Dec. 5. “I feel like online is really taking over,” said customer Misty Washington Tuesday. “It’s more convenient, and you can find more things online, so Im not surprised at all.”They’re part of an historic 1,200 location shut down nationwide announced by Walgreens last month. The chain didnt give specific locations at that time.”Well, I sure hate it because I need a store in the community like this,” said customer Billy Rembert. “Yeah, so I’m kind of saddened by it,” he said.”I’m going to miss this store, and I’m sad to see it go, but so many of them are closing now,” said customer Margaret Burrell. In a statement, Walgreens told WISN 12 News,”… increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures are weighing on our ability to cover costs.”Nearly every customer who spoke with WISN 12 News mentioned blatant shoplifting as a likely factor. “Theft. A lot of theft. I’m being honest,” Burrell said as she left the store on Appleton Avenue. “You come here, you see a lot of stuff. I’m sure they’re taking a great loss at this store. And it’s sad because a lot of people in this neighborhood have to walk here.”Several Walgreens security guards at different stores said they believe rampant theft is playing a role as well.”I feel like it’s multiple reasons,” said Walgreens security guard Rayford Bacon. “It’s income. The store is mainly closing because of stealing. Not making enough profit, and it’s too close to another store,” he said. In their statement, Walgreens added they would “do everything possible to improve the store performance. When closures are necessary, like these two in Milwaukee, we will work in partnership with community stakeholders to minimize customer disruptions.” Walgreens said they “intend to redeploy the majority of our team members from those stores that we close.”
