How these Mass. trainers are helping people keep New Year’s resolutions [Video]

New Year’s resolutions are easy to make but hard to stick to.The second Friday in January, also known as Quitters Day, is often when many abandon their resolutions. However, you may be in luck if your goal is to stay active in 2025.Devin Souza has been coaching gymnasts for 12 years at Gymstreet USA in Wilmington, Massachusetts. For the past six years, however, he’s coached adult gymnasts, ranging in age from 18 to 64. “Growing up, we were also told the fallacy of adult gymnastics kind of wanes off over time and that the best gymnasts are a younger age, and that kind of is not true,” Souza said.According to USA Gymnastics, the average age of their women’s Olympic teams has steadily gone up since 2012. Souza said he’s seen that on a local level in his classes and said it could be a great option for people looking to get fit in the new year. Michel Kammer has been an athlete for Souza for two years. She started taking gymnastics classes for the first time at age 38. “I always wanted to do it as a kid but never had the opportunity,” Kammer said. “This is just more fun. Its more fun to use your whole body and to be with people.”Another fun full-body workout available for those trying to stay fit is mixed martial arts. “Muay Thai is the best well-balanced way to keep the body strengthened and the body going for longer periods,” Citadel Martial Arts instructor Lionel Young said. “If you learn at home, youre learning at your own pace. So a lot of things are going to be tailored for that person.”Young teaches everything, from boxing to jiujitsu to Muay Thai. By learning a martial art, you’ll be learning a valuable skill that, hopefully, you’ll never have to use.”I always encourage people, if youre going to learn something, learning how to lift weights is cool, but learning how to defend yourself is something you can pass onto other generations and other people that you care about is actually way better,” Young said. Both Souza and Young say some benefits go well beyond the gym. “The best thing about being an adult is acting like a kid every once in a while and getting to be in touch with that younger version of yourself. It’s something special,” Souza said.
