A team of 16 swift water rescue personnel have returned to New York State after two weeks of helping hurricane victims in North Carolina. The team was made up of members from the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, the Office of Fire Prevention and Control, New York State Police and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation Forest Rangers. The team started as a swift water rescue team in Yancey County, but also carried people to safety on land and cleared the way so people could use what was left of area roads.During their time down south, they rescued and evacuated dozens of people, recovered bodies, and helped cut up many downed trees to help clear the roads.Rob Praczkajlo is a forest ranger from Lake Placid who was on the team.”It was definitely worse than I thought it would be. I thought that maybe one or two of the river valleys would be affected and in the end basically the entire county that we worked in Yancey County every drainage and every little stream and brook and the big rivers were just devastation on both sides,” he said. When asked why he volunteered to put himself in a dangerous situation, Praczkajlo said he went “just to help the people” because it is what New Yorkers do.
