Mebane City Council is expected to vote on a new development plan that would bring more shops and apartments near where the new Buc-ee’s is being built. Developers will present a new proposal, after the city’s planning board denied their original plan. The 83-acres across from where the new Buc-ee’s is being built in Mebane could be the new home of a residential and shopping space.”This is a very nice project,” said Mebane Mayor Ed Hooks. “It would be a great project for Mebane.”The city’s planning board denied the plans on Trollingwood-Hawfields Road last month, saying developer Koury Corporation, needed to have more space between the site and nearby homes.”Mebane is a growing town and we just have to figure out the best way to grow,” says Kevin Hartzog, a Mebane resident. He and Matthew Skinner say having this new development so close to their property causes them concern about traffic, noise and crime.”It’s going to be a busy shopping center,” Skinner said. “A busy road. Direct eye line to my back windows. What we had was a natural buffer giving us a sense of privacy in our neighborhood; and we had the development come in so close for me and my neighbors.” Hooks says he understands their concerns and he hopes city council can reach an agreement to keep Mebane growing.”What the UDO (unified development ordinance) calls for in this case, it really needs to be expanded to give them a lot more buffer between such a huge project with all the lights and noise and traffic,” Hooks said. Both residents plan to be at Monday’s meeting hoping this time to not walk away disappointed.”I am hopeful that they will look at the city requirements and be a good neighbor and come in and work their development within the confines of what the city lays out in rezoning,” said Skinner.”I don’t mind growth coming to Mebane just as long as Mebane tries to preserve what makes Mebane Mebane,” Hartzog added. “And Mebane’s not a parking lot with a strip mall in it.” The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Public comment will be allowed.
