Storms knocked out power for thousands across Wisconsin on Tuesday. In Milwaukee, strong winds from thunderstorms knocked branches onto powerlines, turning the lights and AC off for hundreds as the temperature spiked to 94 degrees. “We were still cleaning up outages there from last night and overnight. It’s been a busy day so far due to the heat and Mother Nature,” Brenden Conway, a We Energies spokesperson said.Home surveillance video near 61st and Thurston shows winds topple a tree. It landed right in front of a bicyclist, who then crashed into the tree. Neighbors told WISN 12 News the man on the bike was OK, even as power lines sparked around the tree. “It pulled out the ground. The whole roots. I’m telling you, I heard the boom. It shook the whole house,” Fred Powers, who lives nearby, said. The tree knocked out power for most of the afternoon. “It cut off all the power from here all the way to Wisconsin Ave. they say. And I had to wait. And I called on them and I had to wait till it come back on. Man, I’ve been sweating ever since,” Powers said. Powers sweat it out as We Energies crews worked to eventually restore power in the area. “First we had to get a specialized crew to come take down that tree, remove the tree, cut it back. And since then, for the past four hours or so, we’ve had crews here working to restring every line, rebuild part of the power pole that was damaged,” Conway said. Mother nature also struck near 75th and Nash. “My husband said, ‘Oh, I see a spark,’ And so we both came out here, and this is what we walked out to,” said Jacqueline Sweeting. “Lightning hit the tree.”Branches from the tree in Sweeting’s backyard fell on power lines, leaving hundreds without power in the heat and humidity in that area, too. Sweeting told WISN 12 News it’s the fifth time lightning has struck the tree in their backyard. “Once this is all over, we’re going to focus on getting this tree cut down,” Sweeting said. Conway said crews will be working around the clock until power is restored. “We’ve been working nonstop. We’ll continue to work nonstop until everyone’s lights and air conditioners are back up,” Conway said. Conway urged anyone without power to report the outage to We Energies. “If your power’s out, don’t assume that we know about it,” said Conway. “If Mother Nature blows through and we get some more outages tonight, again, keep in mind that we’re still going to probably be cleaning up these outages. So it may take longer, you know, through tomorrow.”You can report an outage to We Energies on their website.
