Omaha officials announce new Children’s Museum plans [Video]

Omaha Children’s Museum is planning to move to The Riverfront.On Thursday, officials announced plans for a new museum at 8th and Douglas streets along the Heartland of America Park.The museum will continue to operate at 20th and Howard streets, and transition to the new location in 2027.Officials said the new museum aims to create a “dynamic, purpose-built childrens museum full of fun spaces inspired by children and their caregivers, shaped by best practices in early child development.””Nebraska is home to some of the nations leading experts on early childhood development who are working with us to plan for the new museum from the building to the exhibits to the programming,” Fawn Taylor, Omaha Children’s Museum CEO, said. “Their guidance will combine with input from national peer museums, decades of experience from our staff, and feedback from the Omaha community to create a dynamic new Omaha Childrens Museum.”The plans for the new museum include a residential complex called The Beam and a new city of Omaha parking garage at the site, officials said.”This entire development fits right in with all the year-round family-friendly activities at the surrounding parks, museums, and entertainment venues downtown,” Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert said. “We love that the site has easy access for pedestrians and cyclists and a location directly on the ORBT bus and Omaha streetcar routes, and we know that the new city of Omaha parking garage will get plenty of use from museum guests, Beam tenants, and everyone visiting downtown.”Officials said the redevelopment agreements and garage are scheduled to be considered by the Omaha City Council in the coming weeks.Longtime museum supporters and volunteers Susan and Mike Lebens played a role in leading the project.”We spent the past year traveling the United States to visit other great childrens museums and are confident that we can create something incredibly fun and full of learning opportunities that is unlike anything else in the country right now,” Susan said.The Omaha community can help shape the new museum by completing the survey here.Click here for the latest headlines from KETV NewsWatch 7

As early voting gets underway in North Carolina, voters in Forsyth County are encountering an obscure race for an obscure office on their ballots: Forsyth County Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor. One voter WXII spoke with said it was a total gamble. It’s like going to a casino and rolling craps, she said. That same voter said she didnt like being in the dark about the candidates positions and visions. It just made me feel ignorant because I didnt know, she said. And I felt like I couldnt just leave it blank.What is the Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor?According to the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, in most North Carolina counties, including Forsyth, a Soil and Water Conservation district is made up of five supervisors, two of whom are appointed by the state Soil and Water Conservation Commission. The other three are elected in non-partisan races. The board meets monthly to discuss matters related to organizing and executing local conservation policy in its district. It also works with local private landowners on implementing conservation practices. The districts were created in response to the devastation caused by the 1930s Dust Bowl. Today, they still address local issues with soil erosion, water quality and flood damage. Who are the candidates?Lei ZhangKernersville resident Lei Zhang is a physics professor at Winston-Salem State University and an environmental advocate. He received his phD from the University of Texas at Arlington and says he has volunteered with several local and national environmental and science organizations. He says his research interests include water purification and solar energy. Clean water and healthy soil is super important for the people in this county, and especially clean water for everybody, and healthy soil can benefit the agriculture in this area. Edward JonesAlso running in this race is Winston-Salem resident Edward Jones. Jones says he worked in the rap industry before committing to his faith and becoming a local reverend. He says he doesnt have any formal education in water and soil, but has hands-on experience working on farms. He says if elected, he wants to ensure projects are completed in a timely manner.
