New Orleans neighbors worried high grass may cause accidents [Video]

New Orleans residents living on Florida Avenue are concerned someone is going to get hurt on their street. Antonio Batiste reached out to the WDSU Road Patrol about a growing problem on Florida Avenue.”I’ve seen accidents, because the road is basically overgrown by grass,” Batiste said. “So it’s pushing cars into the next lane, which could cause a problem.”Batiste frequently travels along the thoroughfare, on the side of the Lowe’s Home Improvement store near the Elysian Fields Bridge. He says on overgrowth of grass and trees from a nearby lot is obstructing drivers view, making for a potentially dangerous ride along this busy thoroughfare.”This was a city lot, public works company … they used to clean the drains and keeps the streets clean. Now, I don’t know what happened to that department … but that lot was used for that. Well, this is what happens after nobody takes care of the property … now all this grass is growing, and it’s causing a problem,” he said.Batiste says he made a request to 311 about two months ago, and since then, he’s seen a crew come out to pick up trash scattered along the road, but no maintenance to the overgrown shrubs.”I even had a few incidents, close calls. So I’m wishing someone would come out and look at it. That’s why I called you all. To see if we can get something done,” he said. With a few close calls of his own during the day, he says it gets worse at night time.”When I get off late at night, and I use this thoroughfare all the times. There’s no lighting; if your car lights go out, you will be in the dark,” he said.He says the solution is simple: cutting the grass cuts down the likelihood of a dangerous situation.
