Classes canceled, teachers fined, as North Shore teacher strikes go on [Video]

Schools in Beverly, Gloucester and Marblehead will not hold classes for another day on Friday, as negotiations continue Thursday to get students back into the classrooms. One district said extracurricular activities like football would go on as scheduled despite an initial call to cancel them.On Thursday afternoon, a court imposed a fine on Marblehead teachers. A court ordered fines for Gloucester and Beverly educators on Wednesday.Teachers strikes are illegal in Massachusetts. The fines begin at $50,000 and increase by $10,000 each day.For the fourth day, Beverly teachers stood out curbside instead of in their classrooms. They said they remain far apart from the school committee.”If we gave in on the fines, we are giving in on the whole unity idea,” Seton Wood of the Beverly Teacher’s Association said. “We are not giving up; the fines arent bothering us.””The school committee remains committed to reaching an agreement that is fair and equitable while remaining fiscally responsible and within the confines of the budget,” the Beverly School Committee said in a statement.Higher pay for paraprofessionals, including teacher assistants like Tana Sindlerova, is a top priority.”I feel like the work I do is important, and I bring home $620 every other week,” she said. “I take them for bathroom breaks, I do some reading with them, I do arts and crafts, I do whatever the teacher needs.”After initially calling off extracurricular activities like football, the Marblehead acting superintendent said the activities could continue with non-union and non-teacher staff. “After taking time to do my due diligence and meet with the Athletic Director and our administrative team, I have determined that we can equitably and safely allow for high school athletic and extracurricular activities to take place as scheduled this weekend,” John Robidoux said in a statement.”We will be utilizing non-teacher, non-union personnel to support these activities and appreciate their assistance in ensuring student participation.”The Marblehead union also seeks higher pay for paraprofessionals and teachers.”We are currently at the bottom of our colleagues in the North Shore. The school committee’s proposal would keep us at the bottom in the North Shore. Our MCAS scores are up at the top. I think it’s fair to say we deserve more than being the lowest paid in the region,” Connor Ryan of the Marblehead Education Association said. The most recent state teacher salary data available is from 2021 and shows all three districts’ average teacher salary was either at or just below the statewide average of $86,000 a year.
