A bipartisan task force report is recommending significant changes to the U.S. Secret Service following two assassination attempts on then-candidate Donald Trump.The task force described both attempts on Trump’s life as “tragic” and “unacceptable.” The first happened during a July rally in Pennsylvania. The second was a month later while he golfed in Florida.The task force noted Secret Service staffing problems, bad communication and faulty planning – all factors that could have prevented both attempts.The report further suggested Secret Service agents protect fewer people during election season, specifically foreign leaders visiting the U.S., and consider moving the agency out of the Homeland Security Department, which has not benefited from stable leadership in a number of years.It also suggested dropping agents’ investigative work during the height of campaign season to focus on protecting U.S. leaders and candidates. Usually, agents are tasked with carrying out a wide range of investigations having to do with fraud and financial crimes.The investigations stem from the agency’s history under the Treasury Department. Following 9/11, the Secret Service moved to its current home at the Homeland Security Department, where it carried out its investigative duties.The report recommends reconsidering the investigations and removing anything that could distract agents from their main job of protecting leaders.Congress passed a bill giving presidential candidates the same level of Secret Service protection as the president in September 2024, the same month as the second attempt on Trump’s life.
