US jobs report shows slower hiring ahead of Election Day [Video]

The U.S. government released a new jobs report Friday, which showed employers are hiring at slower rates than expected. The final jobs report out before Election Day showed employers added just 12,000 jobs in October.Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen attributes the lower numbers to temporary disruptions.”We had significant strikes and two hurricanes, and data in the report shows that employment was depressed by these unusual events. So this is something very temporary,” Yellen said. She also highlighted positive aspects of the report, such as the fact that it shows a strong labor market with the unemployment rate near historic lows at 4.1%.Despite these indicators, many Americans remain concerned about the economy. A recent Gallup poll indicates that a majority of Americans feel worse off than they were four years ago. Bankrate analysis shows prices have increased by more than 20% since February 2020.Joel Griffith from The Heritage Foundation commented on the economic challenges facing families.”If you’re one of those people looking to buy a house or you have a growing family looking to buy a home, the average annual home ownership costs have risen,” Griffith said. “I think this has been more of a crash landing than a soft landing for most families.”Yellen acknowledged the ongoing economic challenges and emphasized the need for further action.”I’m hopeful that we might be able to agree on a package that would add to the supply of housing. It’s still possible. We need to work with Congress,” Yellen said.Other economic data released this week shows inflation is nearing the Federal Reserve’s target of 2%. Yellen expressed optimism about the country’s economic trajectory.”I think the data we are seeing is consistent with the soft landing, which means inflation has come down,” Yellen said. The last jobs report in September saw job gains of more than 200,000. Economists suggest that the recent storms and strikes may have caused up to 100,000 jobs to be lost in the latest report.

Missouri, Oklahoma open investigations on Amazing Structures 24/7 [Video]

Attorneys general in Missouri and Oklahoma have started investigations on a construction company KMBC 9 Investigates highlighted earlier this week.Multiple customers say they paid tens of thousands of dollars to Amazing Structures 24/7 LLC or Amazing Moves 24/7 of Oklahoma but have no homes, barns, or outbuildings in return. At least ten people have contacted KMBC after Mondays story, saying they have concerns about where their money went after paying either one of those companies. The companies are registered to Jay Bowlin of Muskogee, Oklahoma. KMBC has tried multiple ways to contact Bowlin but phone calls and emails have gone unreturned. A voicemail inbox for a company number is full.Customers have told KMBC they have given down payments of 50% to Amazing Structures or Amazing Moves in exchange for scheduling a construction date of six to eight weeks away.Customers are left without finished work when the crews never show up or leave the job early.Kevin Grose, who lives on 10 acres in Pettis County, Missouri, gave roughly $150,000 to Amazing Structures. As soon as we signed the papers, that’s when it started, he said. Just next week and next week or a few days or wouldn’t call you back. And then you’d have to call him two or three times or text message.A crew showed up to pour a concrete pad for a new house, shop, and open recreation area, but left the rest of the job unfinished.Grose said the concrete pad is not level and is currently in a disagreement with the concrete contractor over the job.Grose also said his in-laws also gave money to Amazing Structures, but never received the garaged they were promised. He said friends have donated some supplies to keep the project moving, but, he is trying to figure out how to complete the job. Most of all, he wants his money back. We’re going to keep moving forward, he said. I mean, well figure out a way. A spokesman for Oklahomas attorney general said the office has received three complaints about Amazing Structures. Missouri has received five complaints, according to a spokeswoman for the attorney general. Bowlin is also facing a lawsuit from a company called Express Services Inc. The company, in court paperwork, says it is missing more than $78,000 for personnel and employee-related services Amazing Structures, Amazing Moves, and Bowlin have not paid. An email to an attorney for Express Services was not immediately returned this week. If you have a consumer complaint about Amazing Structures or Amazing Moves, youre encouraged to report it to your states attorney general.
