IM SHAWANDA JONES, WDSU NEWS. HAPPENING NOW. THE FIRST SEVERE BIRD FLU CASE IN THE COUNTRY HAS BEEN CONFIRMED RIGHT HERE IN LOUISIANA. ALTHOUGH THE CASE IS SERIOUS, WDSU REPORTER BRITTANY VERNER SPOKE WITH MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS TODAY, AND THEY SAY PEOPLE SHOULD BE ALARMED BUT NOT CONCERNED. BRITTANY. YEAH, WELL, ACCORDING TO THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL, STATE OFFICIALS FOUND OUT ABOUT THAT BIRD FLU INFECTION LAST FRIDAY, BUT IT WASNT ANNOUNCED UNTIL TODAY. NOW, THERE IS STILL A LOT OF UNANSWERED QUESTIONS HERE, BUT SO FAR, THE CDC SAID THIS IS THE FIRST HUMAN CASE IN THE U.S. LINKED TO EXPOSURE FROM A BACKYARD FLOCK OF BIRDS. WERE TOLD THERES AN ONGOING INVESTIGATION INTO THE SOURCE OF THE INFECTION, BUT IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT THE PERSON CAME IN CONTACT WITH SICK AND DEAD BIRDS IN A BACKYARD FLOCK. THEY DID NOT SHARE THE PERSONS SYMPTOMS, BUT THEY SAID THIS YEAR, MORE THAN 60 BIRD FLU INFECTIONS HAVE BEEN REPORTED, MOST OF THEM IN CALIFORNIA. BUT THE PERSON WHO TESTED POSITIVE HERE IS THE FIRST SEVERE CASE. NOW, MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS ARE REMINDING ALL OF US WHAT WE CAN DO TO POTENTIALLY PREVENT IT. I MEAN, YOUD HAVE TO HAVE DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE BIRD IN QUESTION. I DONT KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE DOING THAT, BUT IF YOU ARE, THEN STILL PRACTICING SAFETY PROTOCOLS, HAND HYGIENE, MAKING SURE THAT YOURE NOT TOUCHING ANIMALS, THAT YOU ARENT, YOU KNOW, YOU DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT. NOW, THE CDC OFFICIALS SAY MOST CASES THAT WERE REPORTED PREVIOUSLY WERE MILD CASES, AND THEY WERE AMONG FARM WORKERS WHO HAD BEEN EXPOSED TO SICK ANIMALS. THOSE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE MORE AT RISK TO CATCHING THE BIRD FLU. HOWEVER, THE GENERAL PUBLIC STILL HAS LOW RISK OF CATCHING THAT INFECTION. REPORTING LIVE IN NEW ORLEANS
