Rio Rancho expands on Digital Defender Program [Video]

The Digital Defender Program is expanding in Rio Rancho schools. Last year, the program started in 11 of Rio Rancho’s elementary schools and will now include three of their middle schools. The Digital Defender is a new educational program that teaches safe online behavior. Rio Rancho’s technology teacher, Tiffany Hale, said it’s important to teach students early on. “There are a number of challenges that come with using technology nowadays, and as you said, our youngest consumers are the ones we need to equip,” Hale said.According to the Pew Research Center, 60% of parents say their child 12 years old and younger have interacted with a smart phone. Adding, six in 10 say their child was introduced to it before the age of 5. This is why Hale said it’s imperative to teach students. “Focus each week on a different topic, anything from how to protect their digital footprint to teaching them how to be kind online and how to respond if they encounter someone online who doesn’t seem safe or follow the rules,” Hale said. The center also found about 46% of parents are worried their children will be exposed to explicit content. Hale believes guiding children to be safe online is important to prevent that but also said the internet isn’t all bad. “We also have to recognize that technology is a fantastic tool for our students and the jobs that our current learners are going to exit school and enter the workforce with jobs that doesn’t even exist right now,” Hale said. The program uses cyber-safety games and digital books to educate students. Last year, 182 students participated in the program. The school district was awarded a grant from the Google Kids Initiative Grant Program” to make the program a reality. The NM Attorney General, Google, and the New Mexico Community Trust teamed up to offer this opportunity. This year, the program runs from Oct. 1 through Nov. 19 before or after school. This is a free program.
