Harris-Walz and Trump-Vance campaigns intensify pitch to voters [Video]

With Election Day less than two months away, the major presidential and vice presidential candidates are focusing their efforts in battleground states.Vice President Kamala Harris will spend the next several days in Pennsylvania, preparing for next week’s debate against former President Donald Trump.Meanwhile, Trump will head to North Carolina, following his economic speech in New York where he pitched lower taxes and higher tariffs. He also floated the idea of appointing billionaire and ally Elon Musk to cut government waste. “I will create a government efficiency commission tasked with conducting a complete financial and performance audit of the entire federal government and making recommendations for drastic reforms,” Trump said.Along with tariffs, Trump proposed slashing regulations to boost energy production and cutting corporate taxes. But contrary to most economists’ predictions, he says tariffs and reduced government waste will offset the rising costs of childcare and get more parents into the workforce.Running mate JD Vance also weighed in, suggesting fewer certifications for daycare workers and making it easier for grandparents to watch children. In a rally in battleground state Arizona Thursday, Vance focused on border and immigration issues.”We’re going to close down that border,” Vance said to a cheering crowd. “If you are in this country illegally in six months, pack your bags because you’re going home.”Vance’s counterpart, Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, emphasized unions and jobs in Pennsylvania. “When unions were at their strength and their strongest and more people were in them, the middle class was better off,” Walz said.Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff will fundraise in Illinois Friday while Vance will do the same in California. In North Carolina, Trump will speak to the Fraternal Order of Police.

Biden, Harris and Trump all oppose the US Steel sale. But that doesn’t mean it’s dead [Video]

President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance disagree on a lot. But there’s at least one thing they’re all united on: opposition to the proposed merger between Japan’s Nippon Steel and the iconic American steelmaker U.S. Steel. But that might not be enough to kill the deal.Harris joined the bipartisan crowd’s opposition in a Labor Day speech to a group that included members of the United Steelworkers union, which strongly opposes the merger.”US Steel is a historic American company, and it is vital for our nation to maintain strong American steel companies,” Harris said in Pittsburgh Monday. Last month, Trump said at a Pennsylvania rally that “I will stop Japan from buying United States Steel. They shouldn’t be allowed to buy it.”Normally, that bipartisan political opposition would end a deal’s chance of survival. Such a purchase needs the approval of the Justice Department’s antitrust division and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). And CFIUS is hardly an independent body it is made up of members of the president’s Cabinet. In addition, the Biden administration’s Justice Department has been far more reluctant to give antitrust approval to proposed mergers, blocking some high-profile deals, such as the proposed purchase of Spirt Airlines by JetBlue. But there’s reason to think that the deal could yet win approval not only from regulators but also from the union now firmly opposed to the deal although experts who believe that could happen say it wouldn’t occur until after the election. The union, for example, is using its current political leverage to get the best possible deal from Nippon and U.S. Steel, including even stronger promises to keep U.S. Steel’s mills that employ union members open and financial protections for anyone who does lose a job, said Philip Gibbs, a steel analyst for KeyBanc.”This might be the best possible deal for U.S. Steel,” Gibbs said. “If a change in ownership is perhaps inevitable, if all roads lead to attrition, why not try to maximize the safety nets in writing. They want to make sure their families are taken care of.”‘The perception of the state itself’The proposed purchase was bound to be unpopular. U.S. Steel was once a symbol of American industrial might. It was the most valuable company in the world and the first to be worth $1 billion soon after its creation in 1901. It was also crucial to the U.S. economy and the cars, appliances, bridges and skyscrapers that tangibly indicated that strength. Decades of decline later, it is no longer even the largest U.S. steelmaker, and a relatively minor employer. But it is still not a company that politicians who enjoy talking about the American greatness want to see fall into foreign hands. There are relatively few steelworkers still working for the company in the crucial electoral battleground state of Pennsylvania. U.S. Steel says it has more than 3,000 employees in the state in its remaining steel mills along the Monongahela River just outside of Pittsburgh. But the company has tens of thousands of retirees still in the state, and many more voters whose parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents may have worked in its mills. It makes the idea of a Japanese purchase of the once powerful U.S. company a politically fraught move, said Gibbs.”You’re not just talking about the perception of the steelworkers, it’s the perception of the state itself,” said Gibbs. “As a politician you have to say you’re not going to stand by and let the deal happen.”But both Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel say they remain committed to pursuing the deal, arguing that it is in the best interest of shareholders, U.S. Steel employees and customers.”US Steel will be a much stronger company as a result of the transaction with Nippon Steel, and the American steel industry will be more globally competitive,” U.S. Steel said in a statement. “Nippon Steel has committed to investing nearly $3 billion in our union-represented facilities. These investments would be truly transformative, securing jobs for generations of steelmakers in western Pennsylvania and represent an influx of capital that US Steel simply would not pursue absent the transaction with Nippon.”U.S. Steel and Nippon both argue that deal will the U.S. Steel’s mills that employ the USW members will be far more globally competitive in a steel industry now dominated by foreign producers, such as those in China. Nippon’s said in a statement it still believes it can win approval for the deal.”We believe that a fair and objective regulatory review process will support this outcome, and we look forward to closing the transaction as soon as possible,” it said.To try to assure its U.S. critics, Nippon Steel issued a statement Wednesday promising that U.S. Steel would continue to have a board of directors made up mostly of American citizens, and that Americans would also be a majority of management at the company. It also said there would be no transfer of any of U.S. Steel’s production capacity or jobs outside the United States. Why the union doesn’t like the dealThe union is concerned that Nippon is more interested in U.S. Steel’s nonunion plants that use electric furnaces to make steel by melting scrap, rather than in the unionized mills, known as integrated steel mills, that still make steel from its raw materials, such as iron ore.”Nippon has shown through their own actions that they’re changing the way they operate in Japan,” Gibbs said about the shift from integrated mills to electric furnaces there. The union says it doesn’t believe in the promises made by Nippon Steel so far and that it remains opposed to the purchase.”Nippon still has not provided any true guarantees that our jobs, wages or benefits will be protected beyond the expiration of our current agreements in 2026,” said a union statement last month. It did not answer a question from CNN asking if it is still talking with Nippon and US Steel about dropping opposition to the deal.If the union does drop its opposition, it becomes much easier for politicians to allow it go through, Gibbs said, even if they would likely want to wait until after the election.CFIUS is supposed to look into the national security implications of deals, and many of the politicians who have come out opposed to the deal claim it would be a threat to the nation’s long-term economic health. A number of experts argue that doesn’t hold up to scrutiny.”Given the U.S.-Japanese alliance, Nippon Steel’s record, and the U.S. Steel existing weaknesses, it is difficult if not impossible to identify a national security risk that justifies opposing the merger,” said Michael Leiter, head of Skadden’s CFIUS and National Security Practices. “It is much, much easier, however, to identify a political risk, and regrettably that calculus is dominating the issue.” CNN’s Matt Egan contributed to this report

Upcoming Trade Show Features 2024 Riverbend CEO Students Showcasing Businesses [Video]

[video:6897]ALTON – Student-entrepreneurs in the Riverbend CEO program are preparing to showcase the hard work behind each of their businesses at their upcoming Trade Show, set for April 23, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Best Western Premiere at 3559 College Ave. in Alton. The 2024 class of CEO students will have an opportunity to take these businesses to the next level as they showcase their ideas and progress at the upcoming Trade Show. The show will feature tables for each of the students presenting their businesses to attendees, fostering a great networking opportunity for all.Drake Jones, a senior at Civic Memorial, said he’s starting his own photography business, adding he recently secured a camera with two lenses and a cleaning kit for just $400. Once the camera arrives, he plans to take photos of everything from his personal interests of cars and nature to the more client-oriented fields of wedding and family photography. His table will feature the best of his photography portfolio, and he also plans to get some business cards made for the Trade Show.Duarell Blocker, a Marquette Catholic senior, is looking to turn a profit in the snack business after scoring a deal on two vending machines – one for soda and one for snacks – for just $300. He said he’s already scouted a location for his machines in an office space somewhere in the local area. While he doesn’t plan on lugging his vending machines through the Best Western Premier for the Trade Show, he said his table will feature a raffle and snack giveaways for attendees.Civic Memorial Senior Lucas Lenger is getting into the automotive restoration industry with his next project, a 1982 “square body” Chevrolet. The car’s lack of a running engine is “no big deal” to Lenger, who added he plans to swap the engine out anyway. He noted that sometimes, the best “barn finds” aren’t discovered through online ads, but through word of mouth – something he hopes to accomplish through one-on-one conversations with Trade Show attendees.Mason Walker, another Civic Memorial senior, said he plans to start a power-washing business. While he still needs to secure the power-washing equipment, Walker said he’s currently and carefully weighing his options before making a purchase. His Trade Show table may feature time-lapse recordings and before-and-after photos showing the impact of his power-washing handiwork.Walker won’t be the only CEO student pitching a power-washing business this year, as Alton High Senior Josiah Donoho also looks to enter the industry after ordering his own equipment. Donoho said he also plans to showcase some before-and-after photos at his Trade Show table illustrating the dramatic difference his power-washing skills can make.Alton High School Senior Jaida London plans to start her own baking business with a focus on sweets and treats. Her current specialty is decorating cookies to look like cartoon characters, donuts, smiley faces, and more. She said her Trade Show table will showcase a wide variety of baked goods, which she’s finalizing the arrangement of as she seeks other opportunities to engage with attendees.Sammy Elliott Barnes, another senior from Alton High, is looking to start his own yoga business for athletes, families, and more. His table at the Trade Show will feature a display of various yoga poses and a yoga mat for attendees to try them out. Barnes added he expects the event will have the networking opportunities he needs to “hit the ground running.”Also in the athletic realm, fellow Alton High Senior Nathan Bartlett said he plans to resell weight equipment he sources from auctions and closing businesses before fixing it up for its next owners. He said he’s now creating a Facebook page for the business, adding his table at the Trade Show will feature a pull-up bar, offering prizes to attendees who can hold themselves up for 60 seconds. Marquette Catholic senior Laura Hewitt said she’s starting a charcuterie business and is currently in the process of ordering product and setting up her business’s social media pages. She said she plans to have individual boxes of her charcuterie products specially made just for the Trade Show. Jayda Duke, another Alton High senior who’s starting her own candle business, said she’s also in the setup stage with products on the way and social media pages pending.Alton High School Senior Parker Mayhew’s business will sell puzzles of local monuments and landmarks around Alton arranged into a collage. His table may include a partially-put-together puzzle for attendees to help finish by placing their own piece, or a time-lapse recording of Mayhew putting together one of his puzzles on display – either way, he said he’ll be selling his puzzles at the Trade Show. While some CEO students knew what their businesses would be from the beginning, others have had recent changes in plans – regardless, they agreed the program can help turn their business ideas into reality.“I wanted to do photography – it’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a while, but with the CEO program, it’s just helped me discover more ins and outs of it,” Jones said.Walker agreed, adding he’s always had business ideas, but the CEO program gives students the ability to “make it real.” This year’s CEO students spoke highly of the program, recalling several impactful speakers and experiences that gave them valuable tools for future success. To learn more about the upcoming Trade Show, this year’s Riverbend CEO students, their business projects, and their experiences in the program, check out the full interview with them at the top of this story or on Riverbender.com/video.
