With Christmas around the corner, Mainers have been spreading holiday cheer all around the state. While some have put a few decorations on their lawn, one couple in Scarborough goes above and beyond every year. Scott Stackpole and his wife Patty Drake started putting up their display years ago after seeing their neighbors light up their year, wanting to compete. Even today, they’re still adding lights each year. They say this year’s display took 250 hours to complete. “There’s not a lot of stuff nowadays that is really good to look at,” Stackpole said. “Just one of the things that we can do for the community.”The couple says they draw inspiration from other homes while also inspiring visitors with their own display. “We want to put the original onto the table so that when the people come by, they just say, ‘Wow,'” Drake said.Their efforts have not gone unnoticed. Stackpole says they get hundreds of visitors.”It’s surprising the number of people that actually want to come and just look at Christmas lights,” Stackpole said. “They’re beautiful, it brings a lot of cheer. It’s just astounding that they really are interested in it.”Stackpole and Drake nearly doubled the amount of lights they had this year, from roughly 48,000 in 2023 to over 83,000 in 2024. The couple lit up their display the day after Thanksgiving this year. The lights are up from 3:45 to 11 p.m., and they’ll stay on until 2 a.m. on Christmas Eve. With how long the lights stay on, it begs the question, how much does spreading holiday cheer add to their light bill? The couple says they’re expecting it to add roughly $200 more to their bill, but for them, it’s not about the price. “Makes us happy, makes the community and our neighbors happy, so it’s worth it,” Stackpole said. Although the lights come down in early January, the couple is already planning for next year. They say they hope to have 100,000 lights next year. “We got a couple tricks up our sleeves,” Drake said.If you’d like to see the display yourself, it’s located on First Street in Scarborough.
