If there is footage from 2008-09 and 2009-10 Texas Tech women’s basketball team games, there’s a slim chance you’ll see a very young Jaquise Martin in it.
As a toddler, he watched his mom, Tilmila Martin, play basketball four years in college, starting at Kilgore College for a year, then Blinn for another before transferring to Tech.
Tilmila, now known as Tilmila Martin-Clayton, teaches physical education and is a basketball and track coach at Stephen F. Austin Middle School in Bryan.
“He was right beside me like my parents could bring him to my games and everything,” Martin-Clayton said.
Rudder’s Jaquise Martin has become one of the top wide receivers in the Brazos Valley and hopes to lead the Rangers to their first playoff appearance since 2021.
Although basketball isn’t the route he’s taking, his own journey has brought him to the next level.
