A former Monroe roller skating rink is targeted to become a new recreation facility with a fitness gym and batting cages.
Jonathan Scruggs, an Amherst County resident, is seeking to rezone about 2.5 acres for the planned recreational facility in the former Skateland on U.S. 29 Business in Monroe. The Amherst County Planning Commission voted unanimously on Aug. 15 to recommend to the county board of supervisors rezoning the site from M-1, Industrial, to B-2, General Commercial.
Previous zoning actions on the property included a wholesale and retail modular homes operation that never opened and a bazaar or flea market, according to Tyler Creasy, the county’s director of community development.
Scruggs is proposing a new facility called Mi-Fitness & CrossFit (MF&C), which the project narrative states is intended to become the best fitness center in the area dedicated to providing a comprehensive and holistic approach to health and wellness.
