PRATTVILLE, Ala. (WSFA) – Members of the Prattville Fire Department’s swift water rescue team are in hard-hit western north Carolina to lend a hand with recovery from Hurricane Helene.
Seven members of the Prattville team were flown in by helicopter for search-and-rescue operations and welfare checks.
The team is working long days in treacherous conditions.
They have limited cellphone service but have been able to give some updates to family and their fellow firefighters back home.
Sgt. Jason Cupps of the Prattville Fire Department said the team is working very long hours in slow-moving, tedious conditions. He said the work is very demanding, both mentally and physically.
“Emotions are high when you’re trying to find missing people, but they’re doing a great job. They’re in good spirits,” he said.
The team did not hesitate to answer for call for help. Cupps said the email came in Friday morning asking for people with training to be ready to leave by lunchtime.
