Prairie Village enacts ban on short-term rentals [Video]

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. (KCTV) – Investors with short-term rentals in Prairie Village will have to start rethinking their business plan. Monday night, the city council prohibited property owners from entering into rental agreements that are less than 30 days long.

The move was directed at doing away with hotel-style stays on platforms like Airbnb. The platform can still be used for furnished rental homes rented for periods of 30 days or more.

When discussion began more than a month ago, most of the input from residents came from those opposed to short-term rentals. More recently, short-term rental owners and managers started adding their two cents.

Prairie Village has become a desirable place to live. The small, suburban city in Northeast Johnson County is filled with quaint houses along quiet, tree-lined streets. Many who live there say rental homes with nightly guests for neighbors is not what they ever imagined.
