A new rule regarding plastic shopping bags is being met with mixed reactions in Soldotna.

The Soldotna City Council just passed an ordinance that essentially bans the use of plastic bags at local businesses. The goal is to reduce the amount of plastic waste in the community.

Back in 2018, the city passed an ordinance that required plastic bags to be of a certain thickness, with the idea that they could and would be reused.

This move takes things a step further by requiring bags to be made from material that can be washed or cleaned regularly.

“The intent of this is not to eliminate the use of disposable plastic bags. It’s to make a reasonable reduction just where it makes sense, and it’s still allowing for the use where there is a genuine need,” said Councilmember Jordan Chilson.
