Nebraska Alzheimers Association offering support for caregivers [Video]

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – In 2015, Heather Kramer noticed changes in her mother Lisa.

“She worked at the same place for over 35 years and called one day because didn’t remember how to get home from work. She’d taken the same way to and from work, so there wasn’t an excuse for it,” Kramer said.

In addition to overt signs of memory loss Lisa was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease five years later.

“Day to day she’s doing fairly well, but she knows that she’s declining and I think that’s what hurts us the most,” she said.

Kramer, her father and her siblings work together to care for Lisa. They are some of more than 40,000 caregivers in Nebraska.

“The more people serve as caregivers, the more intense and arduous their troubles become,” said Sadie Hinkle of the Alzheimer’s Association, Nebraska chapter.
