N.S. news: New bistro highlights international food [Video]

A new pop-up bistro in Cape Breton is offering a venue for international cooks in the region.

The Whale House in Sydney hosts a variety of cuisines from Greece, Lebanon, the Philippines, Vietnam, Nigeria, Jamaica and more. It officially opened its doors on Dec. 5.

“The Whale House incubates local food entrepreneurs and allows them to be leaders in the community by showcasing their ethno-cultural community foods from around the world,” said Ocean Lea, vice-president of the Multicultural Association of Cape Breton. “Being able to house so many different cultures is pretty phenomenal.”

Zeb Zeb’s Kitchen, co-owned by Verley Villegas, is one of the featured food vendors at the Whale House.

“They give us the opportunity to share the story of our food from our country,” Villegas said.

Nick Pino, co-founder of Village People Coffee Roasters, is excited to be involved with the project.

“Coffee allows us to tell distinctly Cape Breton stories from different angles,” Pino said.
